Goal Is To Help Youths In Community

I've been the minister of Yuma Missionary Baptist Church for 37 years. I am also a Yuma native and 14 years ago I started my "jail house ministry", spiritually and morally counseling young men and women that were headed for destruction. Another facet of my ministry is trying to help the youth in our communities.

Coming from a family of boxers, I got involved with the Yuma County Youth Boxing Association. My wife, Eleanor, and I are executive board members of the association. A non-profit program, such as this one, relies on contributions from the city, different organizations and the generosity of the public to make it prosper.

We have had some setbacks -- not having a permanent place to hold our practices or our meetings. But with the generosity of Frank Amavisca, who has graciously donated his building, and all of our trainers and helpers that donate their time, we are starting a "new era".

We have over 100 young people that belong to our organization. We are giving them, in some instances, a place to go and a sense of belonging. We are trying to help the community by keeping the children out of trouble and giving them a sense of pride and responsibility.

If you would like to help the kids of YCYBA, donations can be sent to YCYBA, PMB251, 1107 S. 5th Avenue, Yuma AZ 85364-3801
