Boxing Program Helps Fight Obesity

Published on: October 12, 2006

As a new member of the Yuma community I wanted to voice my opinion regarding an organization that keeps kids first. I am writing about Yuma County Youth Boxing Association (YCYBA). For more than 7 years YCYBA has been able to help give children ages 8-18 the discipline, focus and positive role-modeling that are often lacking today.

As a registered dietician, I am part of this great program as a volunteer nutrition consultant to hlep with the increasing epidemic of obesity and being overweight. Numberous studies have shown obesity and many obesity-related diseases can be prevented through proper nutrition and physical activity.

YCYBA addresses both through boxing training and upcoming nutrition classes. According to the Centers for Disease Control, children being overweight and obese is growing exponentially. Sixteen percent of youth ages 6-19 are considered overweight. This number has more than tripled since 1980.

The services of YCYBA are extremely important and can help fight the appalling obesity epidemic. I hope with the volunteer USA Boxing Certified Coaches and my nutritional expertise we can help the children of Yuma have a bright future free of preventable diseases like heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and some cancers.

If you would like to help the kids of YCYBA, donations can be sent to: YCYBA, PMB 251, 1107 S. 5th Avenue, Yuma AZ 85364-3801

If you have computers, office equipment or gym equipment (including mirrors, rubber flooring, etc.) to donate please call (928).919.0346. We are a non-profit charitable 501(C)(3) organization.
