AMATEUR BOXING By: Rollon Thompson
From the bare fist blows of Jack Johnson to the gloved hands of Jesus Gonzales and Jason Estrada of Providence, Rhode Island, boxing has been a very exciting sport in the twentieth century, and 21st century. It delivered countless memorable moments.
Athletes with finely tuned bodies have always been fun to watch. The careers of these athletes whose accomplishments defined each decade of the century have been a tribute to sports in this millennium. Athletes such as Sammy Sosa, Barry Bonds, Wayne Gretzky, Jim Thorpe, Jesse Owens, Tiger Woods, Bobby Orr, Joe Montana, Venus Williams, Arthur Ashe and there were others.
These athletes became famous even though the nation was involved with the Vietnam War, Watergate, disco, drugs, terrorists attacks, impeachment proceedings involving a president, wild fires, unrest in the stock markets and gang warfare. With all of this going on, sports remained the same. In great athletes we see attributes which we ourselves can only hope to emulate.

Sports are ahead of society. Sports were popular years ahead of TV, Radio, CD's, DVD's, three-piece suits, the mini-skirts and fast food. One hundred years from now the passion for sports will still be alive and well but it will have to go some to equal the past one hundred years.
Consider these sporting events, Mike Tyson's 91 second knockout of Michael Spinks, Ray Robinson's 85-0 amateur record, Ali vs Frazier Thriller in Manila, Rocky Marciano's 49-0 career record, Joe Lewis' 25 successful title defenses, Wilt Chamberlain's 100 points in a basketball game and the Miami Dolphins 17-0 season.
Recall Mohammad Ali holding the torch at the Atlanta Olympic Games. Who taught us that genius is not a gift but the way a person invents in desperate circumstances? Example: Ali's Rope-a-dope. Ali insists that styles make fights.
I urge young people to seek out their nearest gym or fitness center during the afternoon and start an exercise program. You could very well be one of the star athletes of the future, whom we could read about and cheer on to greater heights.
| THINK POSITIVELY
If you think you are beaten, you are.
If you think that you dare not, you don't.
If you'd like to win, but you think you can't it's almost certain you won't.
If you think you'll lose, you've lost. For out in the world you'll find success begins with a fellow's will. It's all in the state of mind.
If you think you are outclassed, you are. You've got to think high to rise. You've got to be sure of yourself before you can ever win a prize.
Life's battles don't always go to the stronger or faster man. But sooner or later, the man who wins, is the man who thinks he can. |
