| AMATEUR BOXING By: Rollon Thompson Boxing is a dangerous sport and I have seen coaches confer greatness upon their boxers long before they are seasoned enough to accept this responsibility. Conferring greatness is telling the boxer he is the next Sugar Ray Robinson, or Leonard or Ali. The boxer will accept matches where his boxer is totally overmatched. When a young boxer is called "great" it is no cause for celebration. The boxer does not realize the "danger zone" he is about to enter. Accepting a bout where the boxer is overmatched could cause the boxer serious injury, a loss of confidence and could cause him to lose interest in boxing. A good coach, who has the trust of his boxer, should want to protect him from hurt, harm, and accident. He should be honest with his boxer and not allow him to receive unnecessary punishment at the hands of a more experienced boxer. Throwing in the towel or mounting the ring apron shows the coach has the safety of his boxer is paramount. If possible the coach should video tape the bout, take the boxer and the tape to the gym, view the tape, point out mistakes being made and proceed to correct these mistakes. Amateur boxing is a continuing learning process and each bout presents a new challenge. |
The boxer's heart tells him to try and continue but his body, his jaw, his ribs, his legs have had enough. Many boxers are afraid of what their coach will say should he ask the referee to stop the bout. The boxer should listen to his heart. Tomorrow is another day and he should return to the gym and with the assistance of his coach, work harder on all phases of training. SCORING WITHOUT THE COMPUTER Amateur Boxing matches are scored on what we refer to as the twenty-point must system, the winner of the round receives twenty points and the loser nineteen or fewer points. Even rounds are scored twenty points for each boxer but judges should try to avoid even rounds. Good judges will make decision and choose a winner and a loser of a round. Anyone proficient in math can figure out that using this system can allow a boxer to win fewer rounds but yet have more points and thereby win the bout. Knowing this, we should detail "Scoring Blows" from non-scoring blows, defensive skills, aggressiveness and ring generalship. Ring Generalship is who is controlling the bout, putting his opponent where he wants him, and using good movement. A "Scoring Blow" is a blow using |
the closed glove and striking the opponent, using the knuckle surface of the closed glove on the front or side of the head and body, above the waist and having the power of the body or shoulder behind the blow. So now you know what to look for. At the end of each round, write your score on the scorecard. Be sure you award the points to the correct corner. (Red or Blue) At the end of the bout, the points are totaled and the winner is the boxer who won on a majority of the points. Circle the name of the winner, check your scorecard for accuracy and hand it to the referee. Judges should remain seated until the announcement is made. Should the referee warn a boxer for a foul, the referee should notify each judge and a point should be deducted from the points awarded the boxer that committed the foul for That round and a notation made in the remark column. Now that you understand scoring, you are set to score each round as it ends. I am sure you will find watching the bout a lot more interesting. Always be fair by not showing favoritism to either boxer. |
