MAY 2002 VOLUME 1 ISSUE 1
Mike Stone to Step Down as USA Boxing Executive Director Colorado Springs, Colo. (April 1, 2002)-USA Boxing has announced the resignation of Executive Director Mike Stone, effective April 29. Stone, who has served as executive director for USA Boxing since April 25, 2001, has accepted the position of commissioner of baseball's independent Northern League Central Division. "Mike Stone will be missed," said USA Boxing President Dr. Robert Voy. "His executive abilities were extraordinary and, although we were only able to have him for a short time, his contributions greatly benefited USA Boxing. On behalf of the organization, we wish him well in his new position. Among Stone's contributions during his tenure with USA Boxing was the hiring of Boxing Hall of Fame member Emanuel Steward as national director of coaching, and the moving of the Everlast Men's U.S. National Championships from Colorado Springs to the higher-profile venue of Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. "I wish the very best for the athletes and National Headquarters staff of USA Boxing," stated Stone. "Under Emanuel Steward's coaching expertise and Dr. Robert Voy's effective leadership, USA Boxing should enjoy a successful future." FAT FACTS
Today, most athletes want to avoid fat-both on their bodies and in their diet. All the gloom and doom written about fat implies there is nothing good about fat. But fat does have some benefits. In fact, athletes need some fat-both on their bodies and in the food they eat. The secret is making sure they have the right amount of fat. Not too much and not too little. Once the appropriate amount of fat has been achieved, trying to reduced body fat or dietary fat will not help. In fact, not having enough body fat can cause problems. And while it is true that a high-fat diet can increase fat levels in the blood of some people, we all need a minimum amount of fat in our diets.

BODY FAT---HOW MUCH?
There is no such thing as the ideal percentage of body fat for a particular sport. Due to genetics and other factors, an athlete may perform his or her best at a body fat much different than other athletes in the same sport. Athletes need to determine their ideal body fat levels based on their performance --- not on the levels of other athletes. It is becoming more and more common for physicians and sports medicine professionals to not recommend a specific percentage of body fat, but instead, use a range or a sum of skinfold measurements. Remember, genetics, age, and level of training influence an athlete's body composition. The best thing for athletes to do is determine where they perform their best and maintain that level. Striving for a body fat percentage that is too low can cause performance and health problems.
DIETARY FAT---HOW MUCH?
The American Heart Association recommends that our diet contain no more than 30 percent of the total calories from fat. This amount is enough for our body to get the benefits fat has to offer while avoiding the possible risks of eating too much. But because each athlete is different, some may eat less, some slightly more than the recommended 30 percent of their daily calories as fat. One risk of eating too much fat is excess calories, which can lead to unwanted weight. A little fat can go a long way when it comes to calories. All fats - saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated - have nine calories per gram, more than twice as many calories as carbohydrate or protein. By having fat in the diet athletes who expend a lot of energy can get the calories they need in less food. It can be difficult for an athlete who needs 5,000 to 6,000 calories a day to eat the large amount of food needed on a diet low in fat.

BALANCING THE TYPE OF DIETARY FAT
It is important to include different types of fat in the diet. Not only does the American Heart Association recommend that 30 percent of the total calories be for fat, but that 10 of that 30 percent be from polyunsaturated fat, 10 percent from monounsaturated fat and 10 percent from saturated fat. It is important to understand that these recommendations are for the calories eaten throughout the day not at each meal or not an individual food.
CHOLESTEROL
Cholesterol is a fat-like substance found in blood and tissues in the human body. It is needed for many body processes. Cholesterol is also found in some of the foods we eat. The amount of cholesterol in the diet may have little bearing on the amount of cholesterol in the blood. The body makes 80 percent of the cholesterol found in the blood. For the most part it is genetics, the total amount of fat and the type of fat that is eaten that determines our blood cholesterol levels, not how much cholesterol we eat. To reduce elevated blood cholesterol levels the American Heart Association recommends that total fat intake should be no more than 30 percent of daily calories with only 10 percent of those calories coming from saturated fat.

WHAT DOES BODY FAT DO?· Adipose tissues serves as source of stored energy.

· The layer of fat just under the skin helps control body temperature within the range necessary for life.

· A layer of fat tissue surrounds vital organs and protects them from shock and injury, a function very important to athletes in contact sports.

· Fat insulation surrounds nerve fibers and necessary for transmission of nerve impulse.

· Fat is a vital part of cells and is necessary to move nutrients into and out of cells.
WHAT DOES DIETARY FAT DO?
· Fats give food its taste. For example, the only difference between skim and whole milk is the amount of fat they contain. If all the fat is taken out of beef, chicken, lamb, goat and horsemeat, it is impossible to taste the difference between them.

· Fats cause food to stay in the stomach longer, helping us feel full longer without getting hungry. This is why having some fat in the diet helps when we try to lose weight.

· Fats are concentrated source of energy. For those who need more calories, fat provides those calories in a smaller amount of food. Without fat in our diet, some of us would not be able to eat all of the food it would take to get the calories we need.

· Our bodies need fat to absorb and use fat-soluble vitamins-vitamins A,D,E and K.

· Linsoleic acid, a type of fat, is necessary for growth and reproduction, and it helps protect us from excessive loss of water and damage from the sun's radiation. It has to be supplied in foods we eat, because our bodies cannot make it.
A W A R E N E S S
ATHLETES NEED A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF FAT IN THEIR DIET AND ON THEIR BODIES

THE SECRET IS DETERMINING THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF FAT

THERE IS NO IDEAL BODY FAT PERCENTAGE FOR PARTICULAR SPORT

ATHLETES SHOULD DETERMINE WHERE THEY PERFORM THEIR BEST AND MAINTAIN THAT LEVEL.

THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION'S RECOMMENDATION FOR DIETARY FAT IS 30 PERCENT OF TOTAL CALORIES.

OF THE FAT CALORIES, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT 10 PERCENT BE FROM POLYUNSATURATED, 10 PERCENT FROM MONOUNSATURATED, AND 10 PERCENT FROM SATURATED FATS.

THE 30 PERCENT FAT INTAKE IS AN AVERAGE FOR THE DAY - NOT FOR EACH MEAL OR FOR AN INDIVIDUAL FOOD.
