AMATEUR BOXING
By: Rollon Thompson

Amateur boxing has been called beautiful, brutal, artistic and scientific. Amateur boxing will test the spirit of young athletes. Recently young women have shown the desire to participate in the sport. Presently there is no clamor for intersex matches.

Many young athletes, male and female, in Arizona have displayed the spirit and desire to learn the manly are of "self defense". They understand they must be tough, able to "dish it out" and "absorb" punishment. They must be quick afoot and must have hand speed, think clearly and have endurance.
Most mothers don't like their children to fight but, amateur boxing does get them off the streets during high crime hours. Should a young boxer have dreams of becoming a great boxer they must be teachable and willing to train and they must have a passion for the sport.

It is very important to select the gym that has an experienced coach and trainer. A good coach will not allow his boxer to be overmatched and a good trainer will teach the boxer how to "polish" their abilities by shadowboxing in front of a full length mirror.
A good trainer teaches the boxer to box with his legs as well as his hands. Their lower body put them in position for their upper body to attack and avoid getting attacked. A good boxer should be solidly constructed, intelligently trained and soundly motivated. It is only then that they reach their potential.
